The Blogging Struggle. It’s Real.

by Jacqui Genow | Oct 22, 2019

BY JACQUI GENOW

Let’s face it. Blogging is tough.

Figuring out what to write about. Finding the time to write. And then doing it all consistently is no simple task.

And when there are no obvious results from your efforts, it can make it even more discouraging to keep going.

Keep on Blogging. Or Call it Quits?

Like many of you, I also struggle to consistently publish new content. Sometimes the words just flow out and I’m able to produce several articles in a short period of time (which I stock-pile for future use). Other times? Well, other times I find myself staring at a blank screen wondering if it’s worth it to keep going.

One of my favorite bloggers, Mark Schaefer, recently posted the piece, “When is it time to quit blogging (you might be surprised!)” It was just the motivation I needed, and I wanted to share it with you. To help you find the motivation you might need to keep going.

When you find you’ve hit a wall and are considering whether to quit blogging or not, in Mark’s words, “You need to keep going.” Here are a few highlights from the motivations he outlines in his blog:

  • Blogging helps you learn, grow and provides clarity on your positions.
  • Blogging provides search engine benefits. Both in the short-term and long-term (evergreen posts can provide benefits years after originally posted.
  • Blogging is your content engine. I was recently asked to speak at a local marketing event. Having a library of content to pick from lessened the amount of time it took to develop the talk.
  • And my favorite… blogging is good for your health! (No, really. Studies prove it.)

If You’re Just Getting Started with Blogging

Just starting out with your blog or thinking of whether you should? If you are not hiring a copywriter to produce articles for you, I recommend to start slow. Write a minimum of six posts (to be posted once a month) before posting anything. Going through this process will help you decide if you’ll be able to commit to blogging for the long run, how much time it takes you to produce content, and how often you can realistically post.

If writing isn’t your thing, consider video or doing a podcast.

You can find more tips in The Small Business Guide to Starting a Blog.

What to do When Your Blog Has Stalled

A few years ago, I inadvertently quit blogging. Inadvertently because it wasn’t so much a conscious decision, as I just sort of stopped blogging. For the better part of a year there was nothing.

It happens. I learned to forgive myself. And then I got back to it.

So, what do you do when your blog hits a wall?

In Getting Back to Blogging, I reached out to my blogging community for their tips and insights on how to stay focused, keep your blog up and running, and what to do if you have hit that wall.

Yes, blogging is tough. The struggle is real. But the benefits can certainly be worth it. So, keep going!
